As part of our striving to leave as light an environmental footprint as possible, LUXE is printed entirely with vegetable oil inks. Read all about it here.
Paper magazines, tactile, analogue media: in this digital age, there’s something still very magical about such things. But, as well as wanting to make a magazine that felt wonderful, looked wonderful. We wanted to make a magazine that tried its best to leave as minimal an environmental footprint as possible.
This is where our printing company, Kousoku Press, stepped up to help us do both: to create a beautiful object that we are proud of. And to create it in line with Sustainable Development Goals.
Kousoko have a license agreement with the Japan Printing Ink Makers Association to use the vegetable oil ink mark. Which we proudly display in the back of LUXE. The inks they and we use are environmentally friendly vegetable oil inks, certified as an Eco Mark product by the Japan Environment Association.
The regenerated oils are made from renewable plant-derived oils such as linseed oil, tung oil, coconut oil and others. As well as recycled, used cooking oils.
As well us being printed exclusively with vegetable oil inks, LUXE is also made with FSC-approved paper. This is paper made from wood sourced from responsibly managed forests that meet strict environmental and social standards set by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This certification ensures that the paper is not harvested illegally, protects biodiversity, respects the rights of Indigenous Peoples and workers, and helps prevent deforestation. There are different types of FSC-approved labels, including “FSC 100%” (all materials from certified forests), “FSC Recycled” (made from 100% recycled content), and “FSC Mix” (a combination of certified and/or recycled materials). LUXE utilises this ‘mix’ paper.
